DESIGN OF DIGITAL SYSTEMS IN PRINTING
This book is a report on digital system design in the printing business. The common work of several research workers will be presented during a Workshop to be held during the conference in Dubrovnik with the stress on determining future tasks under a project with the same title. Some thirty research workers took part in the project: engineers, professors and experienced experts who are engaged in carrying out the design, photograph reproduction and new security systems in producing books, newspapers, and packaging material using the most diverse techniques. During the workshop we will hear out and comment eight target chosen papers. Most of the presenters were asked to elaborate on current printing business issues and to state their opinion on the future and technical innovations. It may be stated that all papers had been more or less „ordered“ and they were, therefore, prepared during an extensive period of time.
Many designs coming from abroad are not present in our printing works, for instance the production of printing forms on conventional plates but with computer technology. We are lagging behind in the area of holography implementation and radio frequency identifiers. These technical solutions are in store ahead of us and in the near future we will be confronted with such technical details in the packaging material of all products.
A paper has been prepared on securities counterfeiting with the help of more recent printing techniques. This is an introduction to the chapter on the necessity to implement complex graphic design and procedures into document and security production. A part of the research work in the security printing design area leads us towards the need to design new inks that may be reflected in the visible and invisible areas. The method of following up on information transformation concerning the characteristics of such inks is offered. Security design in the printing business includes several techniques in the same place. Contemporary experiments included the use of digital printing inks, conventional printing technique inks and inks that are reflected and are visible in the visible spectrum area only when using ultraviolet and infrared light. This book also contains solutions for new raster elements. An element has been found where the external fringe volume is not altered with the altering of the covering capacity named as the ring element. This opens the discussion on the new point of view when observing unwanted coloring spreading that takes place when blackening is altered in reproduction photography.
Holography and RFID implementation are necessary in providing the product's authenticity, goods flow control, the database elaboration concerning the state and flow of stock, for example. It is anticipated that an extensive chapter on people, material and products flow control is ahead of us that will be executed in a completely different manner. The book provides software designs for control of the database on the printing products originals and counterfeits. The graphic industry is at the center of these novelties and research work. Printers are highly interested by the questions: „What will be produced in future?” „What does a mass production graphic product look like?“ Printers feel that they are able to face any new technology and to improve production lines. An inaccurate estimate on the printed product future may cause the ruin of many plants in today's printing industry. The newspaper industry takes part in mass book printing; packaging material is included in the security printing area; planning of new inks, new types of paper and new post production procedure is anticipated in the graphic product design.
The most extensive period of discussion time at our conference will be granted to planning and software solutions for the digital work flow in the printing production. Throughout the world issues on standardization and production standards are open to the tiniest details. This is possible if the models are well designed as well as the simulation experiments on the graphic product production process. Up till recently certain production processes have been modeled and it was impossible to find solutions enabling the connection of machines different as to their “age”, made by different producers. Now we are dealing with program integration of all the steps in a production chain. Databases and programming are based on new principles. Graphic operators have been joined by experts of different profiles: computer operators, informatics experts, process designers, technologists specializing in different environment protection areas. The new book presents scientists and professors dealing with the described issues through their projects. Some thirty papers have been produced under the project „Digital systems in the printing business“ and the conference is where eight unpublished papers written last year are elaborated in respect to results.
